college admissions interviewRemember that the college interview is as much an opportunity for the school to learn about you as it is for you to learn about the school

There is no right or wrong answer during a college interview – it isn’t a standardized test. Think of it as more of a conversation. Don't stress too much. Applying to college can feel like a drag, so keep this in mind: The interview can be a fun part of the college admissions process. Just don't imitate our cartoon friend on the right! 

To get you started, we've selected some common college interview question types.

Some form of these questions will be asked during your interview. If you spend some time thinking about ways to answer these questions in a way that is authentic to you, you'll go into your interview feeling confident....and that, dear college applicant, is golden. 

1) Why are you interested in our college?

2) Why do you want to major in __________?

3) Tell me about a challenge you overcame.

4) If you had to do something differently in High School, what would you change and why?

5) What makes you different than other candidates? How do you describe yourself?

6) What do you like to do for fun?

7) How do you envision yourself in 10 years?

8) Tell me about your favorite book and why.

9) What do you see as your biggest weakness?

10) How do you define success?

11) Who in your life has most influenced you?

12) How will you contribute to our college?

Now that you're familiar with these questions, let's talk about your demeanor and professionalism during the interview.

Do’s & Don’ts of the College Interview

• Do your homework. Knowing as much as possible about the school will make you an appealing candidate. Prepare 2-4 questions for the interview.
• Do dress professionally. Don’t let your clothes define you.
• Do use your best etiquette i.e. shake hands firmly, make eye contact, sit up straight, etc.
• Do share your enthusiasm for the college.
• Don’t be late. Showing up 10 minutes early is a good idea.

• Don’t wait for the interviewer to engage you.  Ask your own questions.
• Don’t try to be someone else. The interviewer wants get a sense of who you are . Be yourself.
• Don’t forget to send a follow-up note to thank the interviewer and reiterate your interest in the college (email is fine).

Sophie holds an MPA in Public Administration from NYU and a BA in Comparative Literature from Dartmouth College. Outside of teaching, Sophie has spent her career working at the intersection of the public, private and nonprofit sectors to promote access to healthcare, education and employment.
