Topic: The Poetics of Rock Lyrics    

Immerse yourself in the work of the best Pop and Rock lyricists while also learning about the social and historical circumstances that informed their  writing. Critical readings (and listening) will pave the way for an exploration of these writers' impact on American society, and the world beyond.  Lyricists will include Randy Newman, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Jacques Brel and more.

Brent Katz, Professional muscian, BA in Music and Literature - NYU 

In 2008, Brent graduated from NYU, double-majoring in Literature and Music. He made the Dean’s List and was awarded the Dean’s Grant for Creative Writing. He has consulted for several indie record labels and has worked as a professional musician, recording and teaching piano, guitar and drums. His music has appeared in shows such as Gossip Girls and Skins. His short fiction has been published in magazine form by Penguin-Random House and he is represented by the literary agency Kuhn Projects. He is currently at work on his first novel.

Since graduating from college, Brent has tutored high school students in literature, history and writing. He also enjoys helping applicants with admissions essays. While requests for music theory tutoring are few and far between, his expertise also lies in this area.

Brent’s hobbies include the three R’s: reading, writing and dancing to Robyn. He also loves the New York Knicks, and believes they’ll turn it around someday.
