5 books to keep your reluctant middle schoolers reading all summer long

books-3

It can be hard to keep your child reading after the school year end. These are five of my favorite books to recommend for any reluctant middle school reader. These stories will keep them engaged and excited to read all summer long!
1. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Rick Riordan was a middle school teacher before publishing his bestselling series, so he knows how to keep middle school students engaged. These books are not only exciting, but they are also filled with Greek mythology, and a diverse cast of characters.

2. Belly Up by Stuart Gibbs

Stuart Gibbs excels at writing fun, hilarious, and engaging stories. When an animal at the zoo turns up dead, no one suspects foul play but Henry. Belly Up follows Henry as he investigates the crime.

3. A Dash of Dragon by Heidi Lang and Kati Bartkowski

Do you have a fantasy obsession kid at home? This one is for them! This story is filled with magic and dragons that will keep their imagination going all summer long.

4. Ghost by Jason Reynolds

This is perfect for any child obsessed with sports, particularly running. Ghost is chosen for an elite middle school track team, that could qualify him for the Junior Olympics, and the book follows his struggles at home and on the field.

5. Warcross by Marie Lu

If you can’t get your kids to stop playing video games this summer, this is the book for them. Warcross is best for 7th and 8th graders or slightly more mature readers (there’s some violence). It follows a worldwide virtual video game competition and is full of twist and turns to keep your reader engaged.
