How to make studying for the GRE more fun

Studying for the GRE might not be something you look forward to, but don’t worry - you’re not alone! Fortunately, there are some tips and tricks to make the process a little bit more enjoyable and even rewarding.

Practice with friends

If you happen to have a friend who is also preparing for an upcoming test, why not work together? As long as you’re somebody that doesn’t get too easily distracted, feel free to team up to tackle practice material. Quiz each other on vocabulary with flashcards, or review practice questions together as a team, working collaboratively and discussing any questions you answered incorrectly. Associating memories with a particular concept can help make the material stick, and you are more likely to be able to recall terms on exam day!

Make content relevant to you

If you’re having a hard time remembering a word or concept, try to find examples that might be interesting or relevant to you separate from test preparation. For example, if you are studying vocabulary and love music, your retention could be improved by searching for words from your vocabulary list on Chosic. The results will show you song lyrics that contain your search terms. By listening and exploring while you study, and again by creating memories associated with the information, you may be more likely to remember the material. Being creative with your studies can make studying more interesting, and also make connections that will be more memorable to you in the future.

Treat yourself!

Building small treats and breaks into your study plan can help motivate you to stay on track. It can be something small (a piece of chocolate or a few minutes of phone time) or something larger (the pair of shoes you’ve had your eye on, a workout class you love) for when you hit bigger milestones. Whatever motivates you, use it as an incentive to power through study sessions and feel good about your progress!
