Three tips to get off MBA waitlists

MBA admissions waitlists
By Jasmin

Being waitlisted for your dream MBA program can feel extremely frustrating. After all the hard work you put into your application, you're left in limbo, unsure of what's next. Getting off the waitlist is possible with the right approach.

Here are three tips to stand out and secure your spot:

1. Reaffirm Your Fit and Commitment

MBA admissions teams care deeply about "fit" - whether you'll thrive in their program and community. Use the waitlist as an opportunity to reaffirm why you belong at their school. Provide updates on new achievements, awards, promotions, or other developments that further exemplify your leadership potential. Explain with specifics how the program's curriculum, clubs, and experiential opportunities align perfectly with your goals. Take this opportunity to update the Admissions Committee but be careful not to overwhelm them with documentation! A monthly cadence can be ideal, but try to speak with past students that have successfully gotten off the waitlist to understand any school-specific best practices.

2. Get Endorsements and Recommendations (if allowed)

Having others advocate for your admission can be powerful. Reach out to professors, supervisors, or colleagues who can write a strong endorsement letter highlighting your talents and fit for the program. It can be even more helpful if your endorsers are alumni from the MBA program.

3. Be Resourceful and Persistent

Seek advice from current students, alumni, admissions consultants - anyone who can provide an insider perspective. Attend local admissions events to network and remind the committee of your enthusiasm. At the same time, be sure to develop a backup plan in case you do not move to the admitted pool. At the end of the day, stay optimistic and remember that you will find success regardless of whatever happens.

The waitlist is not the end, but instead another chance to reinforce why you deserve a seat in the next class. This is a navigable process - hang in there and best of luck!
